About

My name is Joe Barry, the clinician behind Somerset Pain Specialist. Living with pain can mean navigating conflicting advice, different treatments and competing explanations about what is happening and what might help. My assessment process aims to join up the dots and understand what is contributing to your pain. From there, we can create a tailored rehabilitation plan to get you back to living life the way you want.I originally trained as a physiotherapist in Bristol. After several years working in physiotherapy, I became increasingly interested in chronic pain and began focusing more specifically on supporting people with complex and long-standing pain.Alongside my clinical work, I completed a Master’s degree in Pain Management in 2025. While working within a specialist pain management service in Lincolnshire, I received training and supervision in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. I also pursued further training in approaches including Motivational Interviewing and Cognitive Functional Therapy, which have helped shape how I work.I joined the Somerset NHS Pain Service in 2025, working within a multidisciplinary team and have continued to develop my practice through specialist training, external courses and clinical supervision. Working in a senior NHS role has further reinforced the importance I place on clear, balanced and evidence-informed care.My approach continues to evolve as our understanding of pain develops. I draw on contemporary pain science, coaching and rehabilitation principles, psychologically informed practice and clinical research - recognising that evidence always needs to be considered in the context of the individual person, their circumstances and what matters most to them.
